Another life and how I came to be a writer
After 15 years as an industrial relations lawyer – with a niche in serious incident response: ie. I was the bastard out on site cleaning up in a legal sense when an employee lost an arm or worse – I decided that I couldn’t wear a suit for another minute. A second bout of breast cancer made the decision a no-brainer. Swapping court-room drama for a more gentle and soul-satisfying life wrapped up in words, the writing Gods smiled on me with the plum role of Lifestyle Ed. at Time Out Melbourne magazine, looking after music, shopping, “around town” and kids. Sadly, the format of the magazine changed and my role was made redundant. Since that time, I've been freelancing.
What I do now and how I can help you
These days, I contribute features to a mix of lifestyle and industry publications, including The Domain Review, Inked Magazine Australia, Supper Magazine (UK), Mojo (UK), Glory Days (NZ), Bite, Vet Practice, FAT Magazine, Beat and Brag (covering music and arts), Rhythms, Broadsheet and Red Bull Australia.
I also ghost-write:
Between my legal and writing background, I've got some serious experience under my belt dealing with competing and urgent deadlines. Plus, the legal grounding trained me well to be a responsive journo who can think, make decisions and work quickly to get the best info, present it the right way, and meet deadlines. Also, it hasn't hurt that years of working for super-strict partners have made me a stickler for good grammar, punctuation and proofing (we were beaten with metaphoric sticks otherwise).
I'm always on the lookout to expand the stable of publications and peeps for whom I write, so please hit me up if you think I'd be a good fit.
